With great excitement and humble gratitude I will be running the 124th Boston Marathon on April 20, 2020 for Dream Big!
For as long as I can remember, sports have been an integral part of my life. I started playing t-ball in kindergarten, added basketball in second grade, and finished with cross country in college. I have spent countless hours on the basketball court, softball field, and cross-country trails. Growing up, I was playing to play the game, to compete, to be the best I could be, I had no idea how important this would ultimately be for my future personal and professional life.
Sports have taught me everything about life. They showed me how to be a team player, a leader, and how to win with grace and lose with poise. Playing sports ingrained in me the characteristics needed for success. It instilled in me confidence, commitment, time-management, determination, and perserverance. In essence, the opportunity to play sports has made me who I am today.
I was fortunate that I did not have to worry about where my next pair of basketball shoes or softball glove was coming from, but that is not the case for everyone. Dream Big! has been instrumental in providing girls from low-income backgrounds with access to sports, sporting equipment, and mentorship. I would not be who I am today without having had the opportunity to participate in sports, therefore it is a privilege to support Dream Big! and young female athletes as they strive to achieve their goals.
Dream Big! is a 501c(3) non-profit supporting opportunites for young girls who, due to economic circumstances, are unable to participate in athletic endeavors. The mission of Dream Big! is to help young girls and young women from low-income situations achieve their dreams by providing them with equipment, sports attire, athletic footwear, training and program fees, and leadership training needed for them to participate in sports and physical activites that contribute to the health, education, and overall well-being. Dream Big! has impacted over 8000 girls in 125 sports programs and schools in economically disadvantaged communities last year. Funds raised through the B.A.A. Boston Marathon Official Charity Program will help Dream Big! to further breakdown the economic barrier that curently prevents many girls from prarticipating in sports and physical activites.
To get an idea of what your money will buy: $35 will purchase a regulation soccer ball or basketball, $75 will purchase a new pair of sneakers or cleats, $100 pays for an 8-week dance or fitness class for one girl, $200 pays for a new bike and helmet, and $500 pays for new sports equipment for one team for a season.
As you support the 2020 Dream Big! Boston Marathon Team in their quest to reach the Boston Marathon finish line and their fundraising goals, please know that you are changing the lives of so many inspirational girls and young women.
