Together, we can have a vibrant community where people of all cultures feel welcome and can participate effectively
“No matter where you come from, you can keep learning to change the world for the best.” - Linda, Oregon State University.
A child’s pride when she hears her parent speaking English; a young adult’s newfound confidence that comes with skills to navigate his next steps; the joyful news of a mother’s success gaining citizenship – Your support to Downtown Languages makes it possible.
Linda’s family has attended the Pilas Family Literacy program for the past five years; she has volunteered with the program, and also participated in our Pasos al Futuro Youth Leadership conference. Her family immigrated from Jalisco, Mexico when she was five years old. “The programs at Downtown Languages helped me grow a lot, I feel like I am more responsible… it made me realize that anything we can do to help, even if it’s just one person.” Now a freshman at OSU, Linda is the person in her family to graduate high school and go to college.
Donors like you help approximately 800 students each year, such as Linda and her family, increase their economic prospects, advance their civic participation, and better support their children’s education. You also help us to respond to the current needs of our immigrant community with timely, relevant support. In 2017, together with community partners, we offered workshops to assist families at risk of intimidation, detainment, and deportation of adult caregivers and providers. We also added a second section of our US Citizenship and Civics course to help meet increased demand.
Please help us achieve this vision by making a tax-deductible donation to Downtown Languages. Your gift is vital to our ability to remain responsive to the needs of our neighbors. Thank you for your generosity!
