We are a fully Volunteer Department with two stations. We are located in a very remote area which requires more from us than most departments. Most departments have paramedics, rescue, forest service, hospitals and law enforcement a couple minutes away. In the Double Island area this is not the case ; parts of the fire district are 45 minutes to an hour from any other resource for fire, rescue or medical besides our department . The fire department being so remote requires us to handle medical, fire, searches, water rescue, extrication, road hazard, traffic control, motor vehicle accident, good intent calls, lifting assist, chemical spills, and mutual aid calls for neighboring departments ; on a budget under $50,000 a year. We are attempting this go fund me for new SCBA. SCBA is the air packs that allow firefighters to breath in a fire. Our current SCBA is out of date or not functioning properly. The average cost of new SCBA is $8500 per unit . The cost makes the purchase of new SCBA out of reach for us on our current budget. The NFPA requires us to have 12 units and 12 spare bottles. We have been turned down by grants that are supposed to help low budget departments like ours. We haven't given up but we are in desperate need of SCBA to ensure the safety of our firefighters and to ensure that our community is protected and safe. This equipment will help ensure that our brothers and sisters make it home to see their families at the end of the day. Not only that, it will help us serve the community we swore to protect to the best of our ability. Thank you and God bless.
