Our goal is to replace at least 250 ft. of sidewalk on New Castle's Lower East Side with the help and support of members of the community.
Funds will be used to purchase materials needed for a community-created, community-driven sidewalk repair program wherein local residents, with the support of knowledgeable construction professionals, will come together to repair and replace sidewalks on New Castle's Lower East Side.
The Project will build from the emerging community revitalization project that has been ongoing for 18 months in the Lower East Side. The neighborhood is centered on Court Street which connects the neighborhood to downtown via the mid-19th century Lawrence County Courthouse. New home builds, blighted property removal, home renovations and modifications, community gardens and other community asset building initiatives have been collaboratively accomplished under “Building New Castles – A New Castle Blueprint Communities Project”.
This Project will complement the ongoing revitalization of the Lower East Side wherein all property owners are experiencing a net growth in asset worth, infrastructural improvements e.g. sidewalks and streetlights, are improving safety and visitability and community pride is growing based on individual and community property improvements.
This Project will launch a supported DIY approach to problem identification and solution through a targeted sidewalk repair/replacement event wherein residents will directly remove and replace selected section of sidewalk in their community.
The Lower East Side of New Castle, like many small, rust belt city neighborhoods, is teetering on the edge between deterioration and revitalization. Home values have trended downward as houses are vacated, rental units have taken over single family home homes, blighted properties metastasize, crime increases and community cohesion and pride disappears. The aforementioned Blueprint Communities Project has halted these trends and is powering the movement toward an economically healthy, cohesive and connected community on the Lower East Side. This Project – one in which neighbors contribute directly to their community’s physical and logical connection by building sidewalks – will add strength to the community’s emergence from blight to beautiful. Furthermore, by building sidewalks, residents will have a lasting and concrete reminder of the power of community and collective activity.
1. Sections of sidewalk will be repaired/replaced on/off of Court Street in New Castle’s Lower East Side neighborhood.
2. The sidewalks will measure between 36” to 48” wide as appropriate over the length of 250 feet.
3. Residents of the Lower East Side will contribute labor, skilled and unskilled, required to complete the Project.
4. A celebration of community cohesion will occur upon sidewalk completion.
5. The Lower East Side neighborhood will model how other communities can become problem solvers.
