This year the staff at Homewood Children's Village is running to raise money for the inaugural year of the David J. Carter Memorial Scholarship. David was a member of the Homewood Children's Village team whose light and brilliance was lost too soon. David attended Wilkinsburg High School and graduated with honors from Carnegie Mellon University, receiving a dual degree in mechanical engineering and biomedical engineering. He had a love for education and serving young people. Proceeds will go to establishing an annual scholarship, in memory of David, for high school students in the East End served by the Homewood Children's Village.
Our Mission
The Homewood Children's Village was founded in 2010 to break down barriers to success that Homewood's children and families face. Our mission is to improve the lives of Homewood's children and reweave the fabric of the community in which they live.
Cradle to Career Our foundational work serves children through the Full Service Community Schools model that we implement in three schools serving Homewood's children: Lincoln PreK-5, Faison K-5, and Westinghouse Academy. Full time site-directors work at each school as a liason between the school and outside resources to coordinate community services to meet the holistic needs of each student population. Our goal is to create a comprehensive pathway of support, in-school and out-of-school, from cradle to career. Key Initiatives

2Generation Approach In addition to serving children, our work supports parents and families to build strong and healthy foundations for stable homes - our 2Generation approach. Our initiatives are based on the knowledge that improving adult capabilities to handle life's challenges improves overall child outcomes. Community Renewal For the first time in decades, Pittsburgh is poised for growth and connection to the global economy. Environmental concerns such as air quality, water quality, and stormwater management are particulary important for Homewood as one of 41 vulnerable communities in Allegheny County. That's why we advocate for sustainable community development focused on equity and connecting Homewood residents to tomorrow's opportunities.
