Imagine Scholar is an educational non-profit that serves high-achieving, low-impact learners in rural South Africa. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, South Africa's public schools have shutdown for the foreseeable future. Due to our want to ensure the safety of our students, Imagine Scholar has also moved to an online program (using the messenger app, WhatsApp) that supports students in their communication, thinking, and learning skills while confined to their homes during South Africa's lockdown. Examples of facilitated content include leadership analysis of Nelson Mandela, support in student's self-teaching through their school's curriculum, and explorations into the neuroscience of happiness, relationships, and creativity.
However, some of our students have been unable to access a smartphone while at home, and therefore Imagine Scholar is seeking to finance the purchase of simple, but sturdy smart phones that can be loaned out to students during the (unpredictable) length of this program. A tested and trustworthy smartphone costs $35. Another, very beneficial contribution could be the provision of network for our students to get online. It only costs $20 to get 10 students online for an entire month.
