Dig Missoula is a mission-based non-profit working to build community through the sport of volleyball. From hosting tournaments and leagues, to providing youth training and scholarships for club sports, to capital improvements of local playing facilities, Dig Missoula has established itself as the leader in Montana, growing the sport of volleyball in all demographics.
Dig Missoula has partnered with Missoula Parks and Recreation to renovate and upgrade MSO Beach at Playfair Park. In 1927, Missoula established Hale Field, its first airport. The runway terminated where the current beach courts sit. In recognition of that use, the beach volleyball courts are known today as MSO Beach by the volleyball community. The courts were built over thirty years ago with poles and firm foundations to last the harsh Montana seasons. However, the quality of sand has prevented this facility from being enjoyed by local and regional players. Over the last year, Dig Missoula and Missoula Parks and Recreation have installed quality sand on two of the four courts. This upgrade has seen a growth in league play, youth play, club and high school use, recreational play, has drawn players from other northwest communities and has even drawn recognition from regional professional volleyball organizations. The importance of the courts has been further amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic as the local schools are taking advantage of the scientifically safer outdoor environment for training and play.
Increased use by student athletes as well as local and statewide communities during this current pandemic in particular has brought us to our current campaign to complete the MSO Beach complex through a single fundraiser. In a typical year, Dig Missoula puts on the largest regional grass volleyball tournament in the state. This year that event was cancelled due to COVID-19. With that loss, we saw our largest fundraiser disappear. This is where you can help! Our $25,000 FILL THE BUCKET campaign recognizes that with service to community, every little bit helps. Each bucket gets us closer to our goal, whether an individual can donate $25 to fill 15 five-gallon buckets with sand, or a business can donate $1000 to fill a dump truck with sand.
Once we have FILLED THE BUCKET we will complete the MSO Beach project, establishing the largest state-of-the-art beach complex in Montana and its surrounding states. The complex will also provide a central space that will be made up of deep, quality sand that can be used by local professionals for rehabilitation, small group classes, physical therapy, and personal training.
Dig Missoula is a 501(c)3 entity that is dedicated to providing community opportunities in youth development, scholarship and community growth through the sport of volleyball. It is our hope that you can assist our campaign to create a great outdoor recreation space that builds community. We have seen such a positive impact from our initial changes, and we are truly excited to complete this project, for all of Missoula, Montana and the Inland Northwest to enjoy.
