Hi all! My name is Diana and I am a second-year student in my Master of Public Health program! I have been fortunate enough to be granted an opportunity of a lifetime to go abroad this summer and conduct research with my professor and the people residing in the towns of Mandalay and Magway, Myanmar.
A little about my story... So I always like to have moments of reflection to myself and ask what my purpose is in life and how can I further move the needle in regards to helping others at a larger and more impactful scale. My passion and devotion to help others really flourished when I studied abroad in Cuba during my undergrad in summer 2016. There were many health disparities I witnessed among the Cuban people and it really opened my eyes in a scale never before, where I realized in all seriousness how fortunate I am to live in the country that I do. At the moment, I was pursuing a degree in Nutrition & Dietetics, but after this monumental experience, I realized that I wanted to use my knowledge and the resources that I have and others I can acquire, to help those populations from low-income communities, which is why I decided to change course and pursue a MPH. According to The World Bank, 37% of the population in Myanmar still live near or below the poverty line. Going abroad and making a difference would be the most uplifting and fulfilling endeavor I can possibly involve myself in. I hope that through this experience, it can serve as an introduction and exposure to the advocacy I'd like to continue upon completion of my degree. I also hope that I can publish my findings in the long-run.
I aim to focus my research on one or more of the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being
Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
Goal 10: Reduced Inequality
Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
To conclude, I am raising funds to help cover a portion of my research program cost. Thank you all for your time and thank you for investing in this girl from good 'ol Cicero, trying to pursue her big dreams! ¡Adelante!
