We Tell Our History
In 1972 the Dexter Elmhurst Community Center was founded when prominent entrepreneur Ed Davis granted the site of his former auto dealership for use as a community center. In 2011 the ownership was transferred to the Center’s Board members who continue to be the dedicated gatekeepers of this essential institution. In recent years, however, with a “roll up your sleeves, all hands are needed” work ethic, the Board members and the Director, volunteers and community supporters have guided the Center through its most difficult economic challenges. Now a renewed commitment for the Center with a broader reach is needed as we launch our funding campaign.
We Exist for Our Community
For more than forty years, the Center’s primary mission has been to provide vital social, educational and family service programs that empower and enhance the quality of life for low and moderate income residents within the greater west central communities in the city of Detroit. Our services have included adult day programs, adult education classes, cultural arts and computer courses for youth and adults, health workshops and immunization fairs, lunch programs for children and the elderly, in addition to recreational and sports programs. These services have always and will continue to remain free to our community.
Further efforts to provide additional resources for our residents have been successful through new partnership initiatives with local businesses and organizations. They have included, It Takes a Village, Too, which strengthens families by reuniting foster children with their Parents, Focused Intent Foundation, a group that assists young men of color in applying to and excelling in colleges and universities, and MDUBA Associates, a cultural arts program that cultivates positive self-perceptions among people of African descent. In addition, we continue to position the Center to become more self-sufficient by offering metro area businesses the full experience of our rental facilities.
