About the Team
Our team is comprised of individuals associated with DeVine Physiques, an LGBT+ friendly and inclusive personal training studio in the San Fernando Valley founded by me, Gabriel DeVine.
In 2019, we raised $1,860 against a goal of $1,710 for Trans Lifeline, and I set a PR of 600 lbs. All together, the event raised $14,051 for a well deserving charity.
In 2018, along with the help of two clients (as a contingent representing DeVine Physiques) we raised almost $1,000 for the San Diego LGBT Community Center. All 3 of us set deadlifting personal records at the event, as well. All together, the event raised $9,986 for a well deserving charity.
2020 is the first year that Sarah and Jared are joining the event. We hope to raise at least $3,400 for the selected charity; meaning we plan on lifting at least 3,400 lbs. as a team. This goal is subject to change. :-)
About Pull for Pride
About LGBTQ Center Orange County (Charity): "The LGBTQ Center OC’s mission is to advocate on behalf of the Orange County Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Queer/Questioning communitiesand provide services that ensure its well-being and positive identity." (From their website)
About Women's Strength Coalition (Organizer): Their mission is to build stronger communities through increased access to strength training. They envision a world where everyone has equal opportunity to express their voice and embrace their power.
About Pull for Pride (Event): The deadlift, for the uninitiated, involves stepping up behind a loaded barbell, grasping the bar, standing up with the weight, and setting it back down on the ground. It is a simple lift that is imbued with meaning: coming forward to face a challenge, and succeeding through the simple mechanism of one’s own strength. In accordance with their mission of using our collective strength to benefit the world in a meaningful way, The Women’s Strength Coalition’s June 2020 Pull for Pride Fundraiser will benefit select organizations that provide direct support to the LGBTQ+ community.
Meet the Team
About Gabriel DeVine: Professionally, I am a personal trainer that is dedicated to helping others achieve their health and fitness goals through an evidence based approach that includes nutrition counseling, wellness coaching, and a powerbuilding approach to training.
Personally, I'm a proud queer athlete, natural powerbuilder, pokemon master, and along with my wifey, am a loving parent to 3 of the cutest furbabies you've ever seen.
At the time of registration for Pull for Pride, I'm recovering from a hip injury. Assuming my hip heals in time, I plan on setting a new PR of 615 lbs.
About Sarah Watson: I have been a very proud and VERY vocal cheerleader for my hubs in the last 2 Pull For Pride competitions, but this will be my first ever powerlifting competition. In 2018, right before we tied the knot, I pulled my highest ever PR at 210lbs. Two weeks after our wedding I sustained a rough injury to my right knee, with long term symptoms. After physical therapy and a steroid shot and almost two years of adapted workouts I was still afraid to lift. So my hubs encouraged me to lift for a great cause to get my groove back, and here I am.
When I’m not lifting, I'm working the day job, loving on our 3 adorable furbabies, training at an awesome Muay Thai gym, singing some Karaoke and visiting my wonderfully supportive family in the Bay Area. I’m honored to be a part of Pull For Pride, and I hope this will be the first of many.
About Jared: Jared dragged himself onto this team because he's a sucker for good fundraisers, and needs to plus up his wardrobe for new athletic event t-shirts. Never terribly athletic by normal measures, Jared does benefit from a rare condition called "gigantic legs", gained while inadvisably starting to mountain bike and lift weights as a teenager. Determined to put this freak genetic advantage to use, Jared is attempting to set a deadlift PR of somewhere between 400 - 500 lbs. when not deadlifting, Jared is singing karaoke worse than Sarah and Gabe.
