Thank you for all the donations coming in! We have added another child to our Center family and we are getting more crowded.
Our facility we are working in now is an old residential home that is divided up into several small rooms. We added a large classroom space over 25 years ago and that space is too small now for the number of children and adults we have in the house. Due to its age and even with a newer HVAC system it has been difficult to keep it warm/cool inside for our chldren due to the older windows and doors letting the hot/cold air into the building.
Please help us reach our goal to begin building a new facility in Monett for our preschoolers with disabilities. For more information please feel free to contact me at 417-235-6731. Thank you in advance
The Barry-Lawrence County Development Center is working toward moving in to a bigger space. Our program is dreaming of a larger and more up-to-date building to more easily provide the crucial early intervention services that our children need to help them prepare for kindergarten. These services include physical, occupational, speech, and music therapies. The Development Center has been located in an older residential home converted into our preschool program for 40 years. Children are very distracted during therapies due to a small space with two or more therapists in the same room.
We have had difficulty raising the rest of the money necessary to build a complete, up-to-date, ready to use building due to the pandemic. We need your help to make this dream happen. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide to our facility and children.
Some comments from the parents of a few of the children that have attended the Development Center over the years are copied below.
"Every child that has the amazing opportunity to be a part of this family (BLCDC) flourishes under their care."
"Their mission to help the local area children with special needs and their families has not only been a life saver for me personally but I know must have been for all those other families they have helped throughout the years. "
"From the first encounter we had with Lynda until the day my youngest brother, Diego, “graduated” from the Barry- Lawrence County Development Center; they were always finding ways to help him with Occupational, Speech, Physical and Music therapy. There was a language barrier that needed to be cross being from a Spanish speaking household but between my younger brother, Luis, and I we managed to translate for both Lynda and my parents whenever possible. Lynda helped us to be able to communicate with Diego since he could not speak, through sign language; to this day he still uses it and learns new words. He's ten now, and can speak but still has trouble differentiating certain words. He can walk, run, jump, read, write, and expertly know his way around an iPad. The BLCDC was beneficial to upbringing and development, without them we doubt he would be doing half things he does now."
"The time Ronni spent at BLCDC was so beneficial to her education and her overall development. I seriously do not believe that she would be the well adjusted young lady that she is today had she not had the opportunity to attend this facility. The staff at BLCDC not only teach preschool skills, provide therapies and social interaction, they build a community. The students that attended the Center at the time Ronni did have been her friends all throughout their school years and I anticipate that their bond will continue for years to come. "
"The BLCDC has been such a blessing to our family and to many other families that I know. Our son was born with many complications-he has hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy, and a genetic disorder. Through the help from the center we have watched him do things that doctors told us might never be possible, just last May we got to see our son walk for the first time at almost three years old! We've seen him grow up and do things we never thought we would see. The workers and volunteers at the center have been such blessings in our lives, they make difficult circumstances easier to handle and they are so good with all of these very special kids. Our son will graduate the center soon and we are going to miss this wonderful place but we will never forget everything they have done for us and they will always hold a special place in our hearts! I know the center will continue to do great things for many kids for years to come, because I know our son would not be the little boy he has become without the help of the Barry Lawrence development center!"
