Building character skills in urban youth through the power of horses
Over the past three summers, Detroit Horse Power has taught hundreds of students the joys of working with horses. These amazing animals instill powerful life lessons - confidence, perseverance, empathy, self-control, and responsible risk-taking - that our students carry with them everywhere that they go.
In 2017, we reached more students than ever. Eight weeks of summer camps serving 107 amazing Detroit students. This article, "Bringing a New Kind of Horsepower to Detroit", provides a great window into the experience of our participants. We are so proud of the organization's tremendous growth since we launched with just 18 participants in 2015.
But we know the last day of camp is always bittersweet. Our talented students have gained skills and bonded with their new horse friends over the course of their weeklong experinece. While celebrating their phenomenal accomplishments, our students are eager to continue to work with horses. In past years, the best we've been able to offer is "We'll see you next summer."
This year is different. We told our summer students that we would be launching a new after-school program in the fall. Out of a pool of 64 interested students, we were able to accept 16 Detroit youth into this new cohort. They are meeting six times per month, October through June, to keep developing their horse and character skills. They are getting a broad introduction to all that the horse community has to offer - from rodeo to natural horsemanship to polo and more - and making connections between the social-emotional skills we develop in the horse setting into their everyday lives.
Your support is crucial to making a deep impact in the lives of these young Detroit horse lovers. Our fundraising goal is divided into two parts:
$20K to fund the after-school program through June
$20K to jumpstart our expanded 2018 summer programs
Your donation makes Detroit Horse Power's work possible.
$50 sponsors a day at horse camp for a student next summer.
$150 sponsors a student for a month of after-school program.
$250 sponsors a student's week of summer camp.
Consider what horses and youth enrichment opportunities have meant in your life. You can share that joy and fulfillment with the urban youth in our program.
Thank you for believing in the power of horses to expand opportunities for kids and communities in the city of Detroit.
