“Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to the change the world.” – Nelson Mandela
Every October Determined to Develop brings two of our sponsored students from Malawi, Africa, to several cities in the United States for our yearly fundraising events. Because of COVID-19, our students cannot travel this year, so we've been forced to cancel these events.
We need your help! Since 2010, Determined to Develop has paid the school tuition fees and covered the associated costs for over 1,980 students. We’ve been proven successful time and time again each time a student graduates from high school and is able to move forward with their education and live a quality life. For an example of one such case, please see Yalenga’s story below. With over 250 currently sponsored youth, we ask that you please donate today to fund the school fees and related costs of sending our students to school.
Malawi is referred to as "The Warm Heart of Africa" by locals and visitors for its friendly spirit and welcoming people. While Malawi is a poor county in terms of wealth, it is also a friendly and welcoming one. Despite the country's beauty and natural resources, poverty continues to be chronic and widespread in Malawi, ranked 170 out of 188 countries on the Human Development Index. Malawi's development is hindered by a fast-growing population, limited arable land, natural disasters, food insecurity, HIV/AIDS, and a high incidence of malaria. Almost 50% of the population is under the age of 15, and a large number of these young people are living in poverty. Poverty threatens an individual's most basic rights to survival, health, nutrition, and protection from exploitation. Furthermore, poverty threatens access to education.
Costs such as uniforms, pencils, notepads, and shoes often prove unattainable and make even free primary school too expensive for many Malawi families. Secondary school (high school) is not free, and a lack of school fees frequently causes students to drop out of school to become farmers and fishermen. Our office in Malawi is often visited by families from our surrounding communities, hoping to have the opportunity to be sponsored by D2D. With your help, D2D can continue to welcome these families and more.
By donating today, know that 100% of your donation will be truly providing a life-changing opportunity for our smart and aspiring students in Malawi, Africa!
Determined to Develop has received Platinum Status from GuideStar (the world's largest source of non-profit information), which is their top award for non-profit transparency and accountability.
Yalenga is a beneficiary of the sponsorship program and currently attending Miracle Technical College studying Electrical Installation and Electronic. Below is her story in her own words.
“I was born in a family of 5 children and I’m the youngest in the family. My parents had nothing to support us. They had to sell small mandasis (doughnut) as a source of income for the family. My mom had a dream for me to get an education but to look at the situation of the family the dream couldn’t work out. To me as a child, I also worked hard in school to reach my dream of the future.
In 2012 I went to look for the support of D2D and they chose me as one of the sponsored youth. I started my secondary school at one of the community secondary schools. As soon as D2D saw my performance and hardworking spirit, they decided to switch me to one of the better boarding schools. When I wrote my final examinations at secondary school I applied for college-level to study electrical installation and electronics. I got selected to one of the colleges. I am now doing my college level as an electrician.
Since I started at college I’m seeing big improvements in my life. I’m really excited to see the changes because now I know where I’m going because of D2D. Without D2D and their sponsorship, I could not know what I could be doing right now. Maybe I could be married like my sisters and brothers by lacking school fees but now I’m a better person because I have been able to get an education. So I’m asking you D2D not to stop helping us but continue helping us. We are really thankful for you helping us to have a bright future. May God bless you all D2D sponsors and with your family by providing you with health at all times of your life. Thank you!”
