Urban Initiatives' mission is to use the power of sport and play to empower Chicago's youth to achieve academic success, develop social-emotional skills and build social capital. What started as a small after-school soccer team has now blossomed into an organization that serves over 13,000 from 55 different Chicago Public Schools.
Urban Initiatives has had a relationship with DePaul since 2010 but the Men's Soccer Team has really ramped up its involvement with the organization thanks to Head Coach Mark Plotkin. Last year, the DePaul Men's Soccer Team was able to volunteer at one of Urban Inititiatives' soccer game days and helped to coach and play with over 100 students in the program. Although we were hoping to do it again this spring, plans changed due to COVID-19.
With Chicago Public Schools closed and the COVID-19 pandemic at hand, Urban Initiatives has had to pivot its programming to remote engagements in order to stay connected with their students during this difficult time. They are doing so by connecting with their students in Zoom meetings on a weekly basis to keep in touch and they are developing public content that features, games, social-emotional learning lessons and interviews with some special guests. You can check out their videos here and learn more on their website.
Your donation will help Urban Initiatives continue to serve the students that they have been serving for over 15 years. As a leader in the sports-based youth development space, their mission is important to our team and we hope that you will help!
