Summary –
The Denver VOICE is a monthly street newspaper that provides economic opportunities for people experiencing homelessness and poverty. Since 2007, the Denver VOICE has provided a job for more than 4,400 people.
The VOICE aims to facilitate a dialogue addressing the roots of homelessness by telling the stories of people whose lives are impacted by poverty and homelessness. We are an award-winning publication and a member of the International Network of Street Papers.
Challenge –
Because the VOICE is a monthly publication, vendors face a sales decline at the end of the month which has a direct impact on their income. The Denver VOICE needs to increase sales opportunities to appeal to new vendors and allow current vendors to increase their income and maintain engagement in the program. Vendor feedback has shown a desire for a twice-monthly publication schedule to give them the opportunity to raise their sales and grow their income.
Solution -
Twice-monthly publication would allow vendors to maintain consistent sales throughout the entire month, giving them the opportunity for steadier work and motivating them to remain engaged in the program.
Our Goal - In 2018 the VOICE is taking the first step and increasing our newspaper publication with two special issues and the future goal of increasing publication to twice a month – WE NEED YOUR HELP TO DO THIS. Our vendors need the VOICE and the VOICE needs your support to ensure vendors have every opportunity to earn a sustainable, dignified income.
Our projected publication costs for a single special issue is $3,000, including budgeting for writers, art, design, and printing.
Long-Term Impact –
A steadier income throughout the month will give vendors greater confidence and help them to aspire towards more stable economic positions.
