Under the direction of Sheldon A. McLean, Dillard Center for the Arts (DCA) Wind Orchestra has been selected to perform at the 18th Annual New York Wind Band Festival at Carnegie Hall on March 7 - 11, 2020. They are one of only six high school groups and two showcase university wind ensembles to be accepted for this prestigious festival.
Festival activities will include group workshops with festival faculty, ensemble rehearsal exchanges, and a dinner/dance cruise along the Hudson River. DCA Wind Orchestra has also been selected as the adjudicated ensemble to work with a composer to develop a commissioned work that will be premiered on March 10, 2020 at Carnegie Hall.
In addition to NYWBF, DCA students will be immersed in NY culture with a tour through the historic streets of Harlem and a behind-the-scenes guided tour of the world famous Apollo Theater. Our young musicians will also have the unique opportunity to learn from some of the best in the world with masterclasses from the New York Philharmonic plus attend a live show with the same professional musicans.
About Dillard Center for the Arts
Dillard High School is a historic, public Broward County school located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Established in 1907 and named for black education advocate, James H. Dillard, it was the first public school for people of African decent in Fort Lauderdale. Dillard moved to its current location during the 1940s where famed saxophonist, Julian “Cannonball” Adderley became the high school band director in 1948. In the mid 1970s, the performing arts magnet program was established for all Broward County students in the areas of dance, music, theatre, and visual arts as well as an academic schedule.
Dillard High School now hosts grades 6-12 and the district’s only high school Performing Arts and Computer Technology Magnet Programs with an expansive, open air campus that mimics a small college campus. Recognized for its showmanship, musicianship, and outstanding tradition of community engagement within the Fort Lauderdale community, the Dillard Band is one of the most sought-after bands in the South Florida area. The Dillard Band’s focus includes dignity, pride, and perfecting musical skills. Band students dedicate hundreds of hours preparing to demonstrate increased proficiency before each public performance with the goal of transferring this process to each facet of their lives. The music is a conduit for mentorship.
