The Day Worker Center of Mountain View serves the most vulnerable members of our community, day workers who work hourly low-wage job, yet don’t qualify for any public assistance. Many are homeless and live in their cars or RV. They have no savings and no health insurance. Day workers are among the most vulnerable members of our community: the least well-paid, most unprotected, and most frequently injured members of the domestic workforce.
Before the Covid-19 pandemic, about 65 compañer@s, came to the Center each day in search of work. Now, we limit the number of workers to five. Because of shelter-in-place, workers rarely go out on jobs. Still, we have kept our doors open to offer a limited number of workers a safe space. Our compañer@s know that the Center will always be there to welcome and support them.
Without work coming in, workers, or compañer@s, are left with little to no income and with the excruciating uncertainty that comes with not knowing when they will work again. As its name suggests, the Day Worker Center Lifeline Fund serves as a lifeline to our compañer@s during these unprecedented times, providing them with rental assistance, gas cards, other direct forms of support and phone bill payments. Phones are a way for them to maintain critical connections with family and loved ones and are also critical for us to keep in touch with workers during these times. For health reasons, workers can’t come to the Center but we call them regularly to check in. Without your support, the lives of our compañer@s are in jeopardy.
We are doing what we can but we need your help to ensure that our compañer@s can continue to have a roof over their heads, food, phones, clean clothes and other necessities until these challenging times end. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
