I’m turning 40 on May 2nd, but this age thing is not going to bring me down! It’s time to do something big.
To start the next decade right I’m doing a 100 mile bike ride on my birthday in honor of my absolute favorite place in the whole world, The Michael Lisnow Respite Center.
In 2002 I started working at the Respite Center. At the time I figured I would be there for 6 months as I planned out my next steps towards more education or be a full time folk music troubadour… That was 17 years ago.
I immediately fell in love with the Center’s mission, heart, but most importantly, the people. Every morning I get to go to a job where I feel loved. I walk through the door each morning with a chorus of “Hey Dan!” or “Dan the Man!” or “Hello music man!”
The Respite Center is located in my home town of Hopkinton, MA and it provides emotional and physical support for individuals with disabilities and their families. Over the years I’ve had many roles from leading music classes, organizing field trips into the community, administration, and program development and management.
Over these past 17 years the people there have become some of my greatest friends and teachers. My own two beautiful kiddos have been welcomed into the Center and feel right at home. What a blessing to raise my children in a place that puts human dignity above all, and teaches us all to focus on our strengths.
I would be honored if you helped me meet my fundraising goal and helped me spread the word of this amazing place. All donations go towards scholarships, and last year the Respite Center was able to provide over 40,000 hours of service to families in need.
This will also be the first bike ride fundraiser in the Center’s history, and if people are interested, we are thinking of doing this again in the future. Please let me know if you’d be interested in joining me for a future ride! (30, 50, or 100 miles… and probably in autumn.) 100 miles… here I come!!! -Dan
