In March of this year, the swim community lost a true champion and friend, Dan Fawcett. Dan was an integral part of the Central Area Swimming community, while much of his work was behind the scenes, his presence on deck was a mainstay. Dan was instrumental in securing the new scoreboard and timing system for Bartlett Pool, which as many of you know greatly benefits all Alaskan swimmers. Dan was not only willing to support the swim community through his expertise but was eager to apply what he knew as a coach to this ‘new’ sport, swimming, that his son Conrad and ultimately daughter, Nora brought to him. Dan was always focused on providing opportunities for all swimmers to gain and remain competitive with those in the lower 48, specifically long course/meter races. He felt strongly in supporting ‘the next level’ of opportunity for our swimmers. To recognize Dan’s commitment to the sport, ATS Alaska and the Rand family (Dan’s long-time business partners) have established the Dan Fawcett Memorial Scholarship Fund open to all Central Area Swimmers with an initial gift of $15,000. They are offering a challenge to our community with a generous $5,000 matching grant to be secured from now through March of 2021. There are several ways you can contribute.
