On March 15th, Cyclone Idai made landfall in Beira, a port city in Mozambique. After hitting Mozambique, Cyclone Idai tore into Zimbabwe and Malawi. The United Nations estimates that approximately 700 people have died due to the storm with numbers expected to rise. Further, the damage and flooding caused by the storm has affected 3 million people, 2/3 of which are in Mozambique. Complete villages are destroyed and the UN reports that at least 1.8 million people need humanitarian assistance in Mozambique alone.
With displacement, infrastructure damage and flooding such as this, the World Health Organization (WHO) has indicated that there is "an extremely high risk of diarrhoeal diseases like cholera."
The LifeStraw team is currently coordinating an effort with several partners to arrange the deployment of our products on the ground as safe drinking water is a key issue.
