Cyclone Fani made landfall in eastern India on Friday, May 3rd, 2019. This storm had winds up to 127 miles per hour and was the strongest storm to hit India in approximately 20 years. It then traveled into Bangladesh, and has reportedly killed 34 people in India and 15 in Bangladesh.
Fortunately, significant evacuation occurred in both eastern India and Bangladesh, which has likely reduced the potential death toll. However, over 1.2 million people were evacuated in India and another 1 million in Bangladesh, leaving millions to rely on temporary shelters and resources.
Currently, LifeStraw is coordinating with local and international NGO's to support emergency response efforts. We appreciate your donation and will provide updates and additional photos of our work with local partners as we respond.
6/11/19 - Update from the field:
An additional 283 LifeStraw Community purifiers have been sent to the local Health Mission office in Odisha. From there, this office will distribute the purifiers across the region. We're awaiting photos from their distribution which will start this week. Stay tuned!
5/28/19 - Update from the field:
With the help of our local partner, SEEDS Foundation, we've continued to bring LifeStraw Community to those affected by Cyclone Fani in the Orissa (Odisha) region of India. We've attached some photos from this weekend, when a LifeStraw Community was provided to a small village and the local children got to check it out (and drink safe water)!
5/22/19 - Update from the field:
As of last Saturday (5/18/19), the first round of LifeStraw Community purifiers made their way to the field. See updated photos of delivery and installation in a small village.
In order to continue supporting the over 2 million people affected by this disaster, we need your help. Please consider supporting this campaign to allow us to more swiftly respond to this disaster. We’ll continue to provide updates from the field, so you will have full transparency of your donation!
Thank YOU for providing safe water to those affected by Cyclone Fani!
5/14/19 - Update from the field:
As of 5/7, we allocated over $3000 from the Safe Water Fund to Cyclone Fani Relief and immediately released product from our distributor in India. Our closest distributor is approximately 1,800 kilometers from the affected region, so it took approximately 7-8 days by road to transport the goods.
Therefore, LifeStraw products are now arriving (see photos of product in transport, on the truck) and we can report that we've sent 10 LifeStraw Community Purifiers to our implementation partner (SEEDS Foundation) who are being trained on how to use, train others and conduct continuous monitoring of our products in the field
