Cycling Without Age is a movement started in 2012 by one individual, Ole Kassow in Denmark. His objective was to get seniors who weren’t mobile riding again. In Copenhagen, he started by renting trishaw bikes, similar to rickshaws but with the rider in front. Now fast forward to 2016, when Z-Force member Joel W. watched a Ted Talk by Ole describing the incredible changes and friendships created by these free bike rides. Joel was hooked! He contacted Harbor Club senior living center where he is a volunteer making regular visits to dementia and Alzheimer residents with his registered therapy dog, Gen. The staff was excited about the possibility, but financing was the main stumbling block. Well it’s now 2020. CWA has exploded after Ole’s 2016 Ted Talk and has expanded to over 50 countries throughout the world with hundreds of local chapters. In January, Joel approached Be3 about fundraising for the bike and now, in partnership with PW/Saukville Rotary, Be3 has set a goal to purchase a bike for the center in 2020. CWA is a great opportunity to combine our philanthropy, love of exercising, and biking into helping those in our community. Just think how we will be able to enrich the lives of people who are no longer physically able to do so, but still want to venture outdoors.
