In almost three weeks, on June 15th, I will be riding 50 miles in Cycle the City as part of the Denver Century Ride. I'm not sure why I signed up for this except that one of the teams is Cycle for Strays--raising money for the Denver Animal Shelter. Very randomly in 2007, I decided that I wanted a dog. I had never had a dog nor was I a dog person, but something led me to wanting to adopt. I went to several shelters and finally found the love of my life at the Denver Animal Shelter. Her name was Layla (changed quickly to Leela), and she traveled all the way from New Mexico. As many of you know, Leela was truly my daughter and my best friend. Words cannot express how much she changed my life and I think of her everyday with a smile on my face and warmth in my heart.
Have I ever ridden 50 miles? Nope. Have I started training yet? Nope. Will I crash? Likely. Do I even know how to change a bike tire? Nope. I am riding and going to do the best I can knowing that it will raise awareness for animal shelters, pet overpopulation, and the services that animal shelters provide in our community. My goal is to raise $500. There is no amount too small. Even if you just read this email, I am grateful. If you know other crazy animal people and would like to share, please do. It all goes to a good cause!
