Children’s Workshop School - 5th Grade Washington D.C. Trip Fundraiser
The Children’s Workshop School, founded in 1993, is a progressive public elementary school located on the East Village of Manhattan. CWS strives for students to be open-minded and compassionate; to gain a sense of themselves and others; and to understand and appreciate the diversity of the community. Children are guided and supported to fulfill their creative, physical, emotional, social and intellectual potential. Our goal is for our children to recognize that they have the power and resources to effect change. It is our hope that children will grow to be responsible, critical and caring members of a pluralistic society.
About the Children’s Workshop School - 5th Grade Washington D.C. Trip Fundraiser:
The 5th Grade Washington D.C. Trip is a one-of-a-kind experience for our students at The Children’s Workshop School. It’s a long-standing tradition at our East Village public school to bring a year’s worth of Civil Rights study to a close here. This trip is an opportunity for students, some of whom have not traveled outside of New York City, to see living American history first-hand.
With your help, on June 1st the students will jump off the bus and hit the ground running with three days and two nights of exploration including:
· The National Museum of American History, where the fifth graders will encounter fascinating American artifacts - from a covered wagon that rode the Oregon Trail to the lunch counter where the Greensboro Four started the sit-in movement.
· Stepping back to the 17th century with a visit to Ford’s Theatre where President Lincoln was shot, the Petersen House where he died, and the Center for Education and Leadership which exhibits and illustrates the evolution of Lincoln's legacy.
· Monuments and memorials galore on the National Mall, including the Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. Memorials.
· The trip culminates with a walk through the hallowed halls of Congress to meet with Congressman John Lewis. In past years, the face-to-face with this living legend of the Civil Rights Movement has had a profound effect on our students. Congressman Lewis has always graciously welcomed them, shared personal stories from his life, and sincerely expressed his great hopes for them as future leaders of our country.
As you can imagine this amazing trip comes with a high price. The cost is approximately $450 per student.
The fifth graders fundraise throughout the year with things such as bake sales and money making dress up days. Families are asked to contribute but for some this is not possible and often a balance remains.
We lean on the generosity of you, our community, to help fill in the gap for our kids!
The trip costs approximately $15,000 The Children’s Workshop School PTA is a registered non-profit and your gift is tax deductible. (Tax ID: 13-389-3251).
To that end, we are reaching out to family and friends, and their families and friends, to help us meet our goal. Won’t you help us continue our school’s tradition?
Please spread the word and share the GoFundMe to successfully fundraise for the children at Children's Workshop School.
