In an effort to raise awareness and donations for youth homelessness in Edmonton, I will be running the full NYC Marathon route on Nov. 1st. The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened many of the conditions that drive youth homelessness and created significant financial and operational challenges for organizations such as YESS. Growing up in Edmonton provided me with incredible opportunities and the tools to succeed. I would like to support and give back to the community that raised me, especially in this challenging time.
YESS is a fantastic organization that offers wrap around support for youth 15-24 years experiencing homelessness. While many organizations have made the understandably difficult decision to temporarily suspend their onsite services, this is not possible for YESS. YESS continues to operate as an essential service to ensure programs are provided to youth facing challenges with housing, health and access to food. They have shifted to a 24-hour model between the overnight shelter and daytime resource center. By remaining open, YESS provides a safe place for youth to continue working on their goals and help integrate back into the community.
Funds raised will continue to help YESS remain open. This includes Nexus – the overnight shelter, The Armoury – the daytime resource center and supportive housing – Graham’s Place and Shanoa’s Place. Contributions will also be used to purchase food, clothing and personal needs. YESS has also increased its safety policies and has a need for additional PPE to ensure added sanitation procedures are in place.
My goal is to raise $10,000 to help support YESS and make a difference in lives of youth in Edmonton. Any donations or your support would be greatly appreciated!
