CVC is partnering with teachers at Union High School to get culturally representative books for the students.
A Note from One of the Teachers:
"My name is Isabella and I am a vegan student teacher at Union High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Union High School has about 1,200 students with very diverse backgrounds. For many students English is their second or third language. Overall there are more than 17 languages spoken at Union. It would mean so much to my students to feel like they are represented in the books we read! It would be great to have classroom sets of some of these books so that students can collaborate and discuss the impact and importance of representation in literature circles. Representation matters, I know that both my students and I would appreciate your help in providing diverse books by diverse authors for my classroom!"
From Two of the Students:
"I've read some books in the past from Hispanic authors and it's just nice to be able to read something that you can relate to and so other people can get a better understanding of us in a way."
"I think it's important to read books by diverse authors and diverse characters because by engaging with diverse characters it can help us see the world more clearly and hear the voices of those who normally remain unheard."
Why Representation Matters:
“When children cannot find themselves reflected in the books they read, or when the images they see are distorted, negative, or laughable, they learn a powerful lesson about how they are devalued in the society of which they are a part.” Children are affected by what they see around them, and it helps them to grow." -Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop
In a survey of 2,000 schools, 90 percent of the educators believed children would become more enthusiastic readers if they had books reflecting their lives. -We Need Diverse Books
100% of the donations received in the GoFundMe will be used to purchase culturally representative books for Union High School classrooms.
You can also purchase books and mail them directly to the school. Information about which books are still needed can be found at: http://bit.ly/CVCBookDrive2021
