WE NEED YOUR HELP!
The spread of pseudoscience and vaccine hesitancy is deeply troubling. Science is being politicized, experts scorned, and subsequently the health of our nation is suffering. The World Health Organization lists vaccine hesitancy as one of the top ten global threats. Over three million people die every year from vaccine preventable deaths, approximately 42,000 in the United States alone. During the first five months of 2019, the US saw more cases of measles than it has in 25 years. During the New York outbreak, 654 people were infected, 52 were hospitalized and 19 people ended up in the ICU. A study published in The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene estimates that approximately 5,800 people were admitted to a hospital in the first three months of 2020 as a result of false information on social media. The number of children declining the MMR vaccine for non-medical reasons increased by 25% in one year. With the current pandemic and the Covid-19 vaccine being introduced, this particular number is extremely alarming. The economic fallout of the anti-science campaign has become staggering. Educating the public on where and how to access accurate information pertaining to health and science is now a national emergency.
Through public awareness campaigns, collaborative relationships with the medical and science community, and social media platforms, CT Citizens for Science, a nonpartisan, nonprofit, combats misinformation and vaccine hesitancy, as well as offers advice on how to source peer reviewed scientific findings. Programs such as our Covid-19 Vaccine Outreach Program and our New Parent Outreach allow us to immediately impact Connecticut residents and businesses, and ensure success with immunization rates. Our Government Affairs services offer long term benefits as well by working with state representatives, government officials, and institutions to effectively pass positive proscience legislation, monitoring declining immunization rates in schools, and disseminating information pertaining to Covid-19 and the vaccine as it becomes available.
