Hi Friends and Family,
The short version, I'm running the New York City Marathon. Lot's of people fundraise for marathons, HOWEVER, this one is a little different. Most everyone knows I run to keep my spirit healthy when my life is at it's most chaotic. Additionally, in order for me to do anything well, I need to KNOW what I am doing is benefiting more than just myself. I need to know that I'm really helping someone. Running used to be just about me. But, in this final year of my undergraduate studies, I have found motivation difficult to come by...both in running and elsewhere. Luckily, opportunity knocked! My friends Karen and Pat Lyon's are both long time marathon runners who run on behalf of their son, Luke Lyon's, who has Cornelia de Lange Syndrome. The run to spread awareness. They run to raise funds for better research and to care for other families who also have children with this very rare condition. Getting to know Karen and Pat and their son has blessed me with the opportunity to take up their torch too. Now I can run with purpose again knowing that every step I take will benefit Luke and many other people just like him. I PROMISE to never ask you to run a single mile with me, lol , in exchange for a donation of any amount. Even $1 means that you have now heard about Luke and his syndrome. It means you'll recognize those with CdLS's and their need for our care and education.
I know, there are many charity and fundraising efforts out there... they can, honestly, begin to blend together and feel like white noise. Those who have CdLS do need funding BUT this effort is just as much about educating community, educating ourselves, as it is about money. Let me know that you heard our message! And, truly, thank you very much for taking what few minutes it will take to show us. Your time and energy is incredibly valuable to us.
