Believe it or not: For children ages 1-14, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury death after car crashes. For every child who dies from drowning, another eight receive ER care for non-fatal drowning. Sadly, almost 80% of children in households with incomes below $50,000 have little to no swimming ability; and research shows 64% of African American, 45% of Hispanic/Latino, and 40% of Caucasian children have little to no swimming ability.
Now consider this: One month of formal swimming lessons, which reduces the risk of drowning by 88%, can cost as little as $50 per child. You and I can make a real difference in the life of a child.
On July 30, 2021, I will attempt to swim solo, non-stop from Catalina Island to San Pedro, CA. The 20 mile swim will be supported by a boat and kayak for safety, but the swim will be completed without the aid of assistance or a wetsuit; just cap, goggles and shorts. The fantastic support crew includes Jessie, Jax, Jeff, Daniel, Todd, Ayda, Ben and Beau. If you can commit to donating $1 per mile ($20), $2.50 per mile ($50) or even $5 per mile ($100), I will commit to you to give 100% of my heart, mind and soul to the swim, regardless of the cold water, large marine animals and physical exhaustion along the way. Together, you and I can equip children around the US with the life-saving skill of swimming.
100% of your donation goes directly to the USA Swimming Foundation, and any donation will help make an impact. The goal of this swim-challenge fundraiser is provide 50+ months of swimming lessons to children around the country. Thank you in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me and the children you are helping.
