Cresthaven Academy Charter School is a free, open-enrollment K-8 public school that gives another education option to the families of Plainfield, New Jersey. Nearly 88% of scholars are eligible for free or reduced lunch, 100% are minorities and 14% are English Language Learners. The school provides a comprehensive education to its scholars that develops the 'whole child' through academic excellence, physical wellness, emotional health, and character enrichment. Cresthaven Academy is built on the belief that all children, regardless of race or economic status, can succeed when given equal access to a high-quality education.
Cresthaven Academy Foundation (CAF) administers all enrichment programming for Cresthaven Academy scholars, including an in-house after-school program that provides homework help and tutoring as well as weekly lessons in art, music, dance, soccer, karate, and swimming taught by highly trained and experienced instructors. CAF also supports field trips to local colleges, museums, farms and zoos, as well as Saturday and summer instruction for a small group of scholars needing extra assistance to boost their academic performance and summer camps.
Parents and caregivers of Cresthaven Academy scholars are able to go to work with peace of mind that their children are in a safe and nurturing afterschool setting. The afterschool program helps our scholars achieve academic gains in math and English and improve homework completion and accuracy. Scholars complete homework assignments under the supervision and guidance of a classroom teacher. Structured physical activity and arts programs promote wellness and develop creativity, listening and communication skills, positive behavior, leadership, responsibility and teamwork.
Studies show that field trips support student learning, yet many schools are reducing field trip budgets, with steeper cuts in urban districts that serve low-income and minority children. CAF provides field trips that enable more in-depth exploration of curriculum topics and broaden scholars’ aspirations for their futures with stimulating experiences in authentic settings. For example, field trips to the Liberty Science Center help increase scholar engagement and interest in science through live, hands-on exhibits. A tour of Kean University geared toward kindergarten scholars opens their eyes to the world of higher education, including potential fields of study and related career opportunities. As many of our scholars would be first generation college students we place great importance on initiating discussions about college at an early age.
Through a dynamic approach focused on developing the whole child, our scholars will not just perform at high academic levels, they will be equipped to sustain and transfer their progress into their college careers and beyond. CAF will use money raised on CrowdRise to support enrichment programs and field trips provided to Cresthaven Academy scholars.
