We are A Light Network, a small local nonprofit, and we launched this campaign to help support the staff at Gentle Ben’s, Nook and Borderlands Brewery during the current COVID-19 pandemic.
The full story:
The last few weeks have taken a massive toll on our community. One of the hardest hit industries in this crisis has been the service industry; the places we go to have a beer, have brunch, dance, listen to music, visit with friends, grab a bite…these are the places we go to share experiences and to feel human.
Tucson is an incredible city, with a diverse collection of locally owned and operated restaurants, breweries and bars. Recently these locally owned businesses have been decimated; the majority of staff have been laid off, hours have been cut to almost nothing and business overall has stalled almost completely. It kills us to see our community, our neighbors, friends and family struggling to keep their businesses afloat.
Tucson is our home. We love this city, and we want to help where we can.
Over the last 6 years A Light Network has developed close working and personal relationships with the owners and staff of Gentle Ben’s, Nook and Borderlands Brewery. During that time they have helped us raise over $20,000 for various causes throughout the Tucson community. Whether we’re raising funds for the Diamond Children’s Center, Tucson education or local families in need, these three businesses have been there for us. Now it’s time for us to be there for them.
When we first reached out to Gentle Ben’s, Nook and Borderlands to let them know we wanted to assist them during this pandemic, the first thing that they all wanted to ensure was that their staffs were taken care of. It wasn’t about the future or whether or not their businesses would survive; it was about the their people and how they could help them.
Richard Fifer, co-owner of Gentle Ben’s Brewery, responded simply “can we have ours go the employees” when I reached out to him letting him know we wanted to raise funds for his company.
Kristin Thompson, co-owner of Nook Downtown, said “our staff is our family, and we won’t go down without a fight.”
Es Teran, owner of Borderlands Brewing Co., simply nodded and offered any assistance we needed to help support his team.
These are owners who truly care about their employees. These are locally owned and operated businesses that are vital to the Tucson community. These are the places that make our Tucson community so amazing.
Every dime we raise will go towards supporting the staff members at Gentle Ben’s, Nook Downtown and Borderlands Brewing Co.. We wish we could do more to help the thousands of service industry workers affected by this crisis, and once we hit our goal, that’s exactly what we plan to do. Any amount we raise over our campaign goal will be used to assist as many local restaurants, bars and breweries as we can.
Like we said before, Tucson is our home; our nonprofit was founded here and we want to do whatever we can to help. Any donation, big or small, will make a difference.
Thank you so much for taking the time to visit and consider our campaign.
You are all awesome.
