At Caritas Communities, we provide very low income individuals with permanent housing, support, a sense of community and expanded opportunities. For more than 34 years, Caritas has helped fill the need for safe, secure housing in Greater Boston.
Caritas anticipates a $250,000 drop in rental income in the coming weeks and months. We rely on rent for 80% of our operating income. No one will be evicted. Your support is critical to keeping our vulnerable residents housed and supported!
How you can help: Many of our residents work hourly, and cannot afford a reduction in hours because people stay home from stores, restaurants and other job sights. A quarantine or illness will devastate the monthly budget of a low wage worker. Our most recent resident survey indicated 30% of our residents are already experiencing food insecurity.
You can support our residents during this crisis through two initiatives:
Homelessness Prevention Program: This emergency rental assistance program will cover missed rent payments for residents who are unable to work due to COVID-19. We need to raise $250,000 in additional gifts this month to meet this need.
Healthy Residents Program: Support for this program will help us keep houses stocked with non-perishable food, over-the-counter medicines, and other health needs as they arise. We need $25,000 toward this program to cover immediate needs.
Many of our residents work in jobs with close proximity to others, which puts them at higher risk. They are also more likely to have reduced hours or lose their job due to social distancing.
Of the bottom 25% of earners:
-less than half have paid sick leave benefits.
-less than 10% have the ability to work remotely
Thank you for your partnership in the fight against homelessness in Greater Boston!
