The COVID-19 pandemic has put strains on healthcare systems everywhere, including Bolivia, where resources and infrastructure have always been more limited; those limitations are made more clear in challenging times. While most of our daily programs and projects are on hold or delayed due to COVID-19 Stay at Home & Lockdown orders, Mano a Mano has been busy donating medical supplies and equipment to healthcare organizations throughout Bolivia over the past few weeks. Supplies are in desperate need: organizations will drive 10+ hours each way just to pick up a few boxes of supplies.
Donating Supplies to People in Need
Mano a Mano sent 90,000 pounds of supplies in November 2019, which arrived in Bolivia just before the lockdown went into effect in March 2020. Your support will fund our current efforts of distributing supplies to hospitals, clinics, and healthcare organizations in need throughout Bolivia. It is a challenging process to distribute supplies in Bolivia; with the very restrictive lockdown in place, Mano a Mano staff had to receive permission to leave their homes and be able to sort and distribute urgently needed supplies related to coronavirus patient care. They are at times sleeping at the warehouse location overnight to be able to distribute supplies as efficiently as possible.
Because of increased demand due to COVID-19, we will run out of supplies much more quickly than normal. While we are currently unable to ship supplies due to the stay at home and lockdown orders, your support will also help us ship more donated supplies from Minnesota to Bolivia as soon as we are able.
For every dollar donated, we can distribute $15 worth of supplies. We do not charge a fee to recipients of supplies. For many of the items we are donating, they are simply unavailable elsewhere in-country. Our goal is $10,000 to help cover the current costs of distributing supplies, but if we are lucky enough to exceed this goal all additional funding will go towards future shipments.
