As a New Yorker, I was devastated watching my city shut down as it became the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic. I watched as many friends and family members lost their jobs overnight, local businesses shutter, and followed news stories on how people were fleeing New York and vowing not to return. After 12 weeks of lock down, NYC is finally beginning to reopen. However, while we see the number of deaths dropping locally, it is impossible to ignore the traumatic destruction that the pandemic is having on Latin America.
After learning more about Direct Relief's recent covid-relief work in Latin America, including its recent shipment of 8.8 tons of medical supplies to Ecuador, I wanted to find a way to support the tremendous work of this organization.
A few years back, I spent a number of months volunteering with a medicine bank in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where I supported a team that collected medical donations from both local and international donors, and distributed them to communities in need all across the country. I saw then the immense need for medicine and medical equipment across Argentina and its neighboring countries, and while local organizations such as this one do fantastic work, we need all hands on deck to help bring more PPE and medical equiptment to into the region to fight COVID-19.
To learn more about the current COVID-19 situation in Latin America, I recommend following this resource from AS/COA: https://www.as-coa.org/articles/where-coronavirus-latin-america

In this time of global crisis, it is more important than ever to come together as a united American continent to help ensure our that our neighbors have the resources they need to get through this cataclysmal situation.
I hope you will consider making a donation to this fundraiser to help Direct Relief continue their medical aid mission in Latin America.
I thank you tremendously for all of your support.
