For the past 20 years, Eaton Canyon Foundation has provided long-term homeless individuals who suffer from mental health and substance abuse with temporary housing, food, water, and essential supplies through our Mobile Homeless Outreach Program.
Currently, we have shifted our focus and resources to contain and decrease the spread of the coronavirus in these vulnerable communities with our COVID-19 Community Crisis Mitigation Program through testing and intervention. Our target population is the Greater Pasadena/San Gabriel Valley, which is home to nearly 59,000 homeless individuals.
During the COVID-19 crisis, unemployment, food and housing insecurity and economic instability are rising which is why our services are needed now more than ever. These individuals have a very high risk of contracting and transmitting COVID-19. While most of the country is taking shelter in their homes and stocking up on supplies, homeless individuals have no home to isolate in and no sanitary supplies to prevent the spread of this virus.
Eaton Canyon Foundation is raising funds for:
1. COVID-19 Rapid Testing Kits
2. Food and Water Distribution
3. Mask, Gloves, and Hand Sanitizer Distribution
4. First Aid Kits, Medical, and Personal Hygiene Products such as Soap and Shampoo.
5. Blankets and Clothing
6. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for on-site field volunteers and staff
Our field team will go to homeless encampments within the Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley Area and set up stations to provide meals, hygiene packages, clothing, and blankets. Our staff and volunteers will dispose of their old blankets, if requested. Concurrently, these individuals will have their body temperature scanned. Those who exhibit indicative signs and symptoms of COVID-19, such as a fever, will be tested using a COVID-19 Rapid Test. If a homeless individual tests positive for COVID-19, our team will immediately reach out to collaborating agencies such as the HOPE Team and Union Station Foundation to transport sick individuals to the appropriate facilities.
We are in dire need of funding due to the increase of COVID-19, rise in homelessness, and the decrease in funding and in-kind gifts. Eaton Canyon Foundation has activated the COVID-19 Community Crisis Mitigation Program to help fill the gap in resources, protect the Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley communities and to alleviate the stress on our overwhelmed first responders.
