Imagine being told that there's a deadly virus snaking through society, and to remain safe, you should stay at home. Now, imagine having no home.
In January 2019, the Continuums of Care reported over 4,538 homeless individuals in Wisconsin. There aren't enough shelters and those on the streets of Milwaukee are asking: where can I shower? Where can I get some food? Where can I use the bathroom? How can I stay safe?
...And many of them have no answers.
At Repairers of the Breach, we are doing everything we can to serve Milwaukee's homeless and at-risk during these stressful times. We are providing needed showers to wash off germs. We are providing a place to warm up and bathrooms to use. We are providing filling and nutritious meals.
However, it's costing us. We've prided ourselves on being able to do a lot with a little. (Our secret was in-kind services and gifts.) However, our staff must now complete their own duties, as well as the duties our volunteers used to complete. If a staff member is at-risk or suspected of having COVID-19, we send them home, and we pay their wage & their replacement's wage. We are purchasing as many supplies as possible, but we're constantly running out. Donations have decreased, and we understand why: many of our own donors in Milwaukee are stretching their funds as far as they can right now.
We need your help. It's vital we keep these services available for our most vulnerable. There are no more libraries, restaurants, or malls for our homeless to go to anymore.
Will you show them you care? Will you donate what you can? Will you be a Repairer of the Breach?
