Established in 1990 to serve the children of Chicago's far southside and surrounding suburbs, this school has seen a lot, and has faced saying its final goodbyes more than once. Each time it has somehow pulled through - with the generosity of community, with the creativity and perseverance of those entrusted with furthering the school's mission to nurture the best within each child, and thereby bring about a better world for everyone.
In 2017 COMS the school community and our extended personal communities really rallied behind us and COMS came out of 2017 strong and hopeful. We moved the school to a beautiful new location in Blue Island and continued the work of building a strong Montessori school.
For three years we have enriched our curriculum by establishing an excellent music program, a one-of-a-kind farm-to-table program, a true whole-child experience for children and their families. Where the magic of childhood is tangible, where children learn in joy and grow into active, community aware adults. For the first time in years the school finally seemed to be standing on surer ground - and then Corona decided to make a grand entrance.
The pandemic has been both a test and a blessing for Council Oak. It has been a blessing in that it forced us, again, to examine our beliefs about education and child-development, to face our fears and to find our grit. The decision to re-open was not an easy one and the daily journey is not an easy one, but it is worth it to those of us who have remained committed to this community and to having a positive influence on the future. Many decisions went into re-opening, and all of them with a high price tag.
We are asking you to rally around us once again and help guide COMS through the pandemic and through the school year so we may continue to offer this learning experience to the children who are here now and to those who will follow in their footsteps.
