We know that these are unsettling, unprecedented and challenging times for everyone - not least those involved in caring for and supporting children in foster care. We are extremely grateful to all those involved in fostering who provide support and stability to children and young people in foster care and we will do our utmost to play our part in this.
In many parts of the country, including Wisconsin, foster agencies are struggling to find new families willing to take children into their homes during this time of uncertainty. But the need for foster families has not slowed down, in reality foster care is and will be inundated with children coming into care.
With schools closed and mandated reporters such as teachers, day care workers, and coaches no longer able to monitor children’s well-being, it’s anyone’s guess how children are faring. But if history is any indication, child welfare workers say that any drop in referrals is a good indicator of what’s to come.
Prior to Covid-19, no community could say we had enough foster families. Just a few weeks ago, agencies were scrambling to find enough foster families because of the opioid epidemic. Now we layer COVID-19 on top of that and the crisis becomes just that much more challenging.”
During this time of uncertainty due to coronavirus, Kindred Heart Families, Inc will remain open as usual for any fostering-related needs, including those which arising as a result of covid-19.
Why Kindred Heart Families, Inc?
In 2000, my husband and I adopted our first child through a family member.
Throughout the following years, we grew as a family by fostering and then adopting another son and a daughter. We love our family – the story of our family, but it can be a long and lonely road. Kindred Heart Families, Inc grew out of a need to love on and support other foster families.
Kindred Heart Families, Inc sole mission is to provide essentials to children in foster care and alleviate the financial burden on foster homes by soliciting, collecting, and packaging placement bags and more for circulation directly with Foster, Kinship, Grandparents raising Grandchildren, Appointed Legal Guardian and Adoptive homes.
As you would suspect these children have a story and a past, but were you aware that most of these children enter into foster care with only the clothing on their back? That leaves these children in an unfamiliar place surrounded by unfamiliar faces. Left having to ask these strangers for a tooth-brush, shampoo and clean clothes. We at Kindred Heart Families are changing that uncomfortable situation with your help. We want no child to enter foster care empty-handed.
Did you know that on any given day, there are nearly 441,000 children in foster care in the United States? The average age of a child in foster care is 8 years of age and the number of male children in foster care slightly out weights female children in foster care 52% to 48%. The number one circumstance associated with children being removed from bio-parents is neglect at 62% of cases, but parent drug abuse is a close second at 36% of children entering foster care.
We are currently raising $37,000 for our Busy Bag Program, in conjunction with our other programs including Welcome Bags, Emergency Care Assistance, Birthday in a Bags, and School Daze Bags.
Kindred Heart Families, Inc. Busy Bags will be distributed to foster and kinship children coming into and those already in care. Our busy bags include stuffed animals, books, fidget toys, movies, family games, puzzles, arts and crafts, a journal and pens, as well as food from our Foster Pantry, including Peanut Butter, Crackers, Fruit Snacks, Mac & Cheese, Juice, Water and More.
Each Busy Bag costs an estimate of $75 to $100 and our hope is to reach at least 500 foster children during this covid-19 crisis. Our busy bags is just ONE way Kindred Heart Families, Inc is honored to support Foster / Kinship families during this irregular times.
