Chinmaya Mission for Rural Development (CORD) was established in Sri Lanka in 2005 in the aftermath of the December 2004 Tsunami. Working at grass root levels, CORD’s mission is to harness human resources and enable the poor to transform their lives through self-driven programs, particularly women and children thereby empowering them. CORD has trained women in skills such as sewing, cooking, and palmyra weaving, and encouraged to work together to establish small businesses that provide them with a sustainable income. CORD also facilitates small bank loans for the groups to help set up their businesses. CORD is now initiating a project to assist ten families in Kilinochchi district that engage in vegetable farming. The families selected from the villages of Nathan Thittam, Viswamadu and Piramandanary will be provided funding for the purchase of seeds, fertilizer and pesticides. The produce will be sold at fair market prices to generate income for the families.
