Each year CulinaryCorps carefully evaluates where our efforts are most needed, and this November—for the first time—CulinaryCorps has set our sights overseas. Next month we launch an innovative pilot trip to Calais, France, to learn how best to provide assistance to those on the frontlines of the refugee crisis. An unprecedented 70.8 million people globally have been forced from their homes among them are nearly 25.9 million refugees, over half of whom are children.
For those currently stranded in Calais, patiently waiting for an opportunity to apply for asylum or join family members abroad, daily life in the French port city can be brutally hard. With attitudes and policies of host nations ever-evolving, living conditions of refugees remain meager at best, squalid at worst, with clean water and healthcare often in the balance. Sadly, children are impacted the most by these circumstances. But a hot meal can make a great deal of difference.
From November 10 to 15, our team of CulinaryCorps Trip Leaders will volunteer at Refugee Community Kitchen. Our trip goal is to cook 5,000 meals for refugees and their families living in the constellation of nearby camps, while giving long-term RCK volunteer cooks a much-deserved break. In addition, we will be making a donation to help cover food and ingredient costs for the week.
Our longer-term objective is to create a sustainable engagement model to launch future trips to Calais, as well as other refugee communities here and abroad. In that way, we can enable many more CulinaryCorps volunteers to engage with this vitally important work. Stay tuned for more details soon after we return.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
1. Please spread the word about this trip! And if you or someone you know is interested in participating in future trips, have them complete a volunteer interest form.
2. Please donate today to help us reach our fundraising goal to cover trip expenses and donations. We need an energetic boost to get us to the finish line within the next week. Every cent donated makes a huge impact on our 100%-volunteer-run efforts and is 100% tax-deductible.
Your moral support and generous contributions will help us breathe life into the saying "set the table for strangers; wash the dishes with friends."
Thank you for helping our mission know no borders.
