Community Food Initiatives (CFI) is a 25 year-old organization with a mission to foster communities where everyone has equal access to healthy, local food. We are proud of our legacy to provide food directly to the under-served in our region and assist individuals and families to grow food, develop cooking skills, and reduce their health risks by eating whole foods.
Accomplishments to date include:
•The distribution of 500,000 lbs of fresh local food to over 40 food pantries in 5 SE Ohio counties while investing $100,000 directly into the local food economy over ten years
•Hosting 25-40 Garden & Culinary Workshops annually
•Over 20,000 square feet of community gardens under production
•Engagement with all five Athens County school districts in over a dozen school gardens
•Providing school garden lesson plans that meet testing standards and continuing education for teachers
•The development of the Ridge & Hollow Seed Alliance, creating economic opportunities for seed savers
CFI is working to expand all programs into neighboring counties to increase engagement with underserved individuals. Join us in growing and sharing the harvest by donating or joining Race for a Reason!
