Commons Cafe is a coffee shop operated by students enrolled in the Life Skills Program at Indiana Area High School. The Life Skills Program offers a specialized placement for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Commons Cafe opened in December of 2018 with support from Commonplace Coffee and community members.
Commons Cafe provides students in the Life Skills Program both appropriate and customized vocational training in the safe and supportive environment of their peers. The primary goal of Commons Cafe is to offer students employment opportunities that will provide them with practical experience to help them secure a job in the community once they graduate.
Commons Cafe is designed to develop work-readiness skills, appropriate social skills, and an understanding of responsibilities necessary for competitive gainful employment. It also offers a unique opportunity for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities to interact with their peers in a workplace setting.
As part of Commons Cafe growth strategy, they are asking for community support to help them purchase a Franke A600 coffee machine and a Point of Sale (POS) system.
The fully automatic A600 coffee machine is extremely versatile and will increase efficiency and work readiness skills.

A POS system will allow Commons Cafe to accept credit card payments, which will provide yet another workplace skill.
Commons Cafe has created a path for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities to become more valued, accepted, and included in their school community, in addition to providing an avenue to increase their employee work readiness skills.
Commons Cafe is more than just a place to grab a cup of coffee, it is a HUG in a MUG!
