We were fortunate this year to receive a generous donation for new paint for FIFI. The airplane is currently in the paint shop and, as you can see from the pictures, they are moving along nicely with the project. But, just like the paint, last done about 30 years ago, we also have need for additional upgrades.
Our next major hurdle is funding much needed avionics upgrades. FIFI’s avionics, installed approximately 30 years ago, are becoming increasingly unreliable and difficult to maintain. This equipment is required to safely communicate and navigate. Additionally Federal Aviation Administration Regulation mandates we must be Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADSB) compliant by January 1, 2020. In order to continue flying in today’s airspace we must move quickly. Funding this project will require a sizable expenditure. FIFI’s operational budget allows us to continue country wide educational tours, however completion of this project will require additional funding.
FIFI is the queen of the CAF fleet. Every year the airplane visits as many as 30 different cities as part of the CAF AirPower History tour. FIFI is one of only two flying B-29s in the world. We are proud to have her in our care and look forward to keeping her flying for many years to come.
