April is always a moving month in the city of Boston when thousands of runners arrive from around the world to tackle the taxing miles of pavement and hills of our beloved Boston Marathon. April 20, 2020 will also mark seven years since the bombings occurred that devastated the city when hundreds of people were seriously injured near the finish line, and three spectators lost their lives, including UMass Boston alumna Krystle Campbell.
The team's marathon journey will be much longer than the 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Boston. As part of the Run for Krystle team, members are committed to raising money for the College of Management at UMass Boston. Funds raised will support programs such as:
· Scholarships for future leaders in business who stand out among their peers for their academic success and involvement in their community but who may not be able to afford college without financial support;
· Fellowships to support students as they perform research, teaching, or service during their undergraduate and graduate years;
· Professional development for faculty to enhance their skills, learn about new healthcare developments, and improve the academic experience for students;
· Women Beacons of Business Program offers career and personal development opportunities to our diverse body of female students. These programs provide the much-needed resources, connections, and skills to enable our female business students to reach their full potential and become our leaders of tomorrow.
At UMass Boston, 72% of undergraduate students receive some form of financial aid. For many, college would not be an option without aid; a student loan may be greater than their family's annual income.
A past scholarship recipient stated: "I am completely financially independent. Paying for school, rent, and living expenses has required extreme budgeting, scholarship searching, and several jobs to make ends meet. It has been the hardest challenge of my life. This scholarship will provide me with the financial security to prosper in my final year of school. I cannot express in words how much this means to me, and how much it will help me."
Your generous donation will honor Krystle's life and legacy and provide inspiration to our team, while the funds raised will work in perpetuity to support students who seek to better themselves and their communities through a UMass degree.
