As we begin our 18th year, we continue to expand and enhance our mission: To provide hard-working, talented, low-income students from Los Angeles communities the same level college access services that more fortunate students receive from their parents and private schools.
However, our students have never faced more challenging circumstances. The COVID-19 pandemic is disproportionately impacting low-income communities. Our students – who are first generation, low income and come from immigrant communities –are facing significant challenges and threats to their futures:
*College and high school closures that have left them disconnected to essential resources
*Social unrest over racial injustice
*Financial hardship caused by unemployment and loss of income
Despite these challenging circumstances caused by COVID-19, 100% of our high school class of 2020 was accepted and committed to a four-year college. Over the past six years, 70% of College Match Seniors have been admitted into a Top 25 college, and 95% of College Match Seniors have been admitted into a Top 50 college. Also, 95% of College Match students graduate from college. (Sadly, the national college graduation rate for low-income students is 16%.)
HOW YOU CAN HELP
We try very hard to keep our costs down, but due to challenging circumstances brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, we especially need your help this year. If you can make a year-end contribution to College Match, our organization would regard your gift as a blessing and we will make sure to pay it forward. Our students and college scholars need your action now more than ever! Together we can ensure that our 620 college scholars and 300 HS students from Los Angeles communities that have been historically deprived of resources are able to achieve the American Dream through a college education!
Our College Match students receive more than SAT help and college visits; we have also launched the following initiatives to support our students through these difficult times:
1) Emergency Fund to support students facing unemployment, illness, food insecurity & the digital divide.
2) Project Match & Resume Book: gives hardworking college scholars meaningful work experiences to build their professional careers by pairing them with high-quality employers.
3) Transferred all our events to the digital environment.
a.) CM Connect: a web app built to connect the College Match community & to efficiently share information and programs for the CM community.
b.) College Wednesdays: weekly virtual presentations from top-ranked colleges & universities in America (i.e. Princeton, Stanford, MIT, Harvard, Dartmouth, etc.).
c.) Career Thursdays: a weekly program where we invite various alumni, industry leaders, employer partners, and HR professionals to discuss career-related subjects.
e.) Financial Aid Friday: weekly support to help our students complete their FAFSA and CSS profiles in an early and timely manner.
f.) College Scroll: an online resource jam-packed with all the info HS seniors need to make an informed decision towards their higher education goals.
4. College Match Podcast: launched a podcast series to share the powerful contributions our students make in their communities through innovative projects, advocacy, and student-led collaborations
5. Care Packages: we sent care packages to over 150 first-year college scholars all over the country to celebrate the start of a new chapter in their life!
