I miss my nephew. His giggles, his curls, his ridiculous debating skills, and funny antics. All the times he convinced me to do things we weren't supposed to do, just by smiling at me with those chubby cheeks. Each day that goes by, it gets harder to accept that he's really gone, and that there is truly nothing that can be done to bring him back. He made this world so happy, and with his passing, made so many heartbroken.
Kerri is the most amazing sister, friend, mother and all around human I know. Being the older of her “big sisters, ” I have always been very protective of our Ker-Bear. When the call came about Colin, I broke down and immediately wanted to help, to fix, to take the pain away from my larger than life “little sister” and her amazing husband. But that was not possible, you cannot “fix” this.
Since July 25th, I have been thinking, crying, angrily praying, hoping for a way to “help” my sister. To somehow take just one ounce of her pain away. That was until I got a message from her. ”If I get a bib for Boston, will you do it with me?” Now, for anyone that knows me, I hate running in the cold! You’d also know that I swore I’d NEVER run another marathon. But I immediately replied, “HELL YES!” So now here we are, running together and raising money for this unbelievable organization, Colin’s Joy Project.
The overwhelming support shown to our family over the past 6 months is something we will forever be indebted to. The strength provided by everyone, led to the idea and creation of Colin's Joy Project. The extraordinary organization, started by my sister Kerri and husband Brendan, is a donor-advised fund through the Boston Foundation. It’s focus is on giving back and creating joy for children and families in Boston. They will use this fund to make grants for rebuilding local playgrounds and funding family-focused programming, for many years to come. Particularly for families in need. How awesome is that?
Colin leaves behind his best friend and partner in crime, his 4 year-old sister Sloane. These two spent countless hours on the playground at various parks around South Boston. We pray his spirit lives on in each of us forever.
Thank you for reading this, and for your helping me to reach my team goal. Not just financially, but physically and emotionally. Fingers crossed for warm weather and a speedy finish.
