Last June, First Lady Melania Trump wore a jacket with the words, "I REALLY DON'T CARE, DO U?" while boarding an Air Force plane to visit detained migrant children at the Texas-Mexico border. The jacket was manufactured by fashion company Zara.
After reading about this incident, and then learning more about some of Zara's other design choices, I put my own (different) Zara coat in the back of my closet and didn't plan to wear it again.
I'll admit that I briefly considered throwing the coat away. However, throwing away a warm coat in a country where tens of thousands live in poverty seems a thoughtless and graceless act. Instead: I WANT TO SEE IF I CAN TRANSFORM THIS ONE REJECTED COAT INTO 25 NEW, WARM COATS FOR CHILDREN IN NEED.
This fundraiser will benefit Operation Warm*, a nonprofit that constructs and delivers warm coats for children in need across North America. To learn more about their work, please go to their official website: https://www.operationwarm.org/
Here's how it works:
1) You donate**.
2) For every $20 donated, Operation Warm is able to make and gift one brand new coat to help keep a child warm.
3) When the fundraiser ends, I am going to carefully cut up my Zara coat and repurpose the fabric into a few hand sewn stuffed animals. These will be donated.
It's been an especially difficult year for underpriveleged children all across North America. I want to show them that I really do care. Do u?
* While Operation Warm benefits from this fundraiser, they are in no other way affiliated with it. They have no political stances that I’m aware of, and (as with most CrowdRise campaigns) the benefitting charity was not contacted directly prior to the creation of the campaign.
**Please note that none of these funds go through me, but all go directly through CrowdRise to the benefiting charity.
