CMD is the consumer marketing and development division of Penguin Random House. Our mission is to get books into the hands of readers everywhere—we love books and storytelling and we believe that the more people read, the more their lives are enriched.
For the Global Walk 2019, we are raising money for Barbershop Books, a nonprofit that creates child-friendly reading spaces in barbershops and provides early-literacy training to barbers.
Developed in Harlem, Barbershop Books is a community-based program that creates child-friendly reading spaces in barbershops and provides early literacy training to barbers across America. They leverage the cultural significance of barbershops in Black communities to increase boys’ access to culturally relevant, age appropriate, and gender responsive children’s books and to increase out-of-school time reading among young black boys.
Every dollar we raise and every step we take on the walk will help nurture young readers from underrepresented communities.
