Club Esteem has been serving children in economically disadvantaged communities for 29 years with its Inspiring Youth ~ Achieving Excellence After-school and Summer Enrichment Program completely free of charge.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic began to impact Brevard County in March, Club Esteem has been on the front lines working diligently to support low-income children and their families. Upon the closures of Brevard Public Schools, Club Esteem quickly jumped into action and setup a daily distribution of nutritious Grab-and-Go meals to feed children (18 years and under) that have lost access to school meals and whose families are facing increased food-related financial burdens. Club Esteem has served thousands of meals and distributed hundreds of bags filled with non-perishable food, produce, pastries, and bread to our most vulnerable populations and plans to continue serving through the summer. We are grateful to our community partners at Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, South Brevard Sharing Center and the Children’s Hunger Project that have shared their resources and enabled us to help more children and families.
Additionally, school closures have disrupted learning and limited student access to proper classroom instruction and support, which especially impacts the most vulnerable and marginalized. Club Esteem has implemented virtual tutoring and homework assistance to ensure students are learning at home, online and offline. We anticipate an increase of students who will be in critical need of our services in the coming months.
In normal circumstances, students in 1st through 12th grade are able to come to Club Esteem and participate in our extensive programs every day after school from 2:30-6:30pm, Mon.-Fri., and during the summer from 12-5:30pm, Mon-Fri. completely free of charge.
Club Esteem students receive helpful direction from caring adults who are there to listen or lend a hand. The culture at Club Esteem is one of family. Many of our students have been coming here for years and come back to visit and even volunteer after they graduate from college.
Our successful program utilizes trained staff and volunteers who provide essential, nutritious meals daily, tutoring in all core subjects, guidance with homework, SAT/ACT test prep, as well as, assistance with applying for college, scholarship applications, and financial aid. Students are engaged in hands-on STEM activities related to civil aerospace, robotics, 3-D printing, rocketry, science experimentation, math centers and coding by professionals in their field.
Students participate in a myriad of activities and clubs within the program including; Business/Financial Literacy where students get a close up look into managing money and operations, Service Learning, (students themselves volunteer for other local organizations), Club Esteem's National Society of Black Engineers Junior Chapter, Future Professionals of Club Esteem, and Career Exploration and Leadership Development where students are exposed to his/her field of interest, afforded opportunities to enhance their work skills, and gain insight into a variety of careers. Our teen students with a 3.0 GPA or above and exceptional leadership skills are given the opportunity to have a paid position as a teen tutor.
