Help bring clean water to the Nuevo Horizonte Cooperative community in El Petén, Guatemala.
Nuevo Horizonte and partner CoDevelopment Canada are seeking to raise Can. $10,000 to install a clean water filtration system. 100% of funds raised will go to the project.
The cooperative was established in 1998, following Peace Accords that ended Guatemala's civil war. The community is comprised largely of families internally displaced by the war, who after more than three decades in the mountains had no homes to return to.
Dreaming of building a model for a new Guatemala, the families settled on lands of a former cattle ranch to start their new lives with almost nothing- no possessions, no housing, no safe drinking water, nor electricity. After years of hard work and devotion, Nuevo Horizonte is today a thriving community. Developing a model of cooperation the people of Nuevo Horizonte have changed their history and the community now serves as an example to neighbouring communities.
A big challenge for the community is access to clean drinking water, particularly in the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Water is a basic need and although there is a working well in the community, it’s water is not safe to drink. This generates myriad of health-related issues for community members.
This project seeks to provide safe, filtered water for everyone in the community. By donating to this cause, you contribute to the installation of a community water filtration system and provide members with specialized training on the maintenance and operation of the new system.
CoDevelopment is a Canadian registered charity and tax reciepts will be issued for donations.
